I am an English tutor living in Canada looking for
new students. I have 1,100 hours of tutoring experience across six years, primarily focused on English tutoring. My teaching style focuses on identifying errors that students make in their language production and learning more about them so that these errors do not repeat themselves over time. |

If you are referring to seven divided by three (math question). I would teach it in this way 1) imagine that the number seven represents seven actual things (i.e. apples) 2) now divide the seven apples into three groups. The student should see that each group gets 2 apples and that the last apple is remaining. 3) Explain that the final apple should also be divided from its whole self into three parts, each of those parts going into each of the groups. One third goes to each group. I'm not sure how to teach beyond this point (how to explain that a third = 0.3) but this is how I'd start the explanation ^ you are dividing the whole number seven into three groups. how much |
I believe that small group classes and individualized learning (1 on 1) tends to create better educational results compared to public or private larger classes. While small classrooms may be more effective in some cases, once the number of students exceeds 6-8, I believe that the additional student numbers are only detrimental. |
I recommend short classes (half hour) for students who are unable to focus for long periods of time. The classes I'm offering are online only (zoom/skype). If a student is unable to concentrate and doesn't want to continue a lesson, we end it at that time and try again in the future. |
If a student doesn't want to study, they should understand the consequences of their behavior (poor grades, lack of confidence with the material). If they understand these consequences and still do not want to study, that is their choice. I am only there to help them and provide good advice and exercises. It is their job to make use of me. |
We look at the material and discuss the importance of learning it for their life (grades, personal gain if any). If they believe that grades and whatever unique benefits the course material offers them is valuable, then this question should be resolved. It's important to ask what exactly the student means when they ask, "what am I studying for?" |
I think that empathy (understanding emotions and intellect) is the most important thing you can exercise when trying to tutor someone. You're trying to understand why they have trouble with material and explain it to them. Empathy is a key communication skill and is important in tutoring. |
I like teaching English because it is the most popular language and a lot of business is done in it. When people learn to speak, they open up new possibilities for making money for themselves and improving their lives. |
I actually think that going to university because my parents pressured me to go there was a mistake. Post-secondary school can be very rewarding if you know why you're there and have clear goals. I didn't. I felt that I was there not entirely out of my own choice. I believe that people have to make decisions for themselves without external pressure, otherwise they may regret their decisions in the future. |
I don't understand the question |
My motivation in high school and University was mostly to just learn new things. I would read material and then go online and learn more about it to get a better appreciation for it. |
There are advantages to dealing with an individual tutor rather than a contractor who hires a tutor and manages them.
The goals that a parent and child may have will differ from the goals that a tutor has. The challenge is in making all three needs meet. This makes teaching children more difficult than teaching teenagers or adults. When you include a contractor, they have their own needs which differ from everyone else's, and it makes the possibility for problems greater. For example, if I as a tutor believe that someone needs tutoring only once a week, but the contractor sets up classes every day so they can make money, then I don't feel that good because I don't feel I'm contributing much value to the student. |
I do not have a favorite motto at the moment. If I had
to choose, I'd say "knowledge is power" is a good motto because I think it's true. Knowledge gives people the opportunity to open up new things, and thus gives them more power to change the world. |
Subjects that you're not good at require the most practice. You have to simplify these things and make it easy to work on them. I think that often in life we are afraid of doing things that seem complicated and difficult at first, but once started become manageable and rewarding. |
I like teaching because it is empowering for students to learn English. I like to be a part of their self-improvement process. |
Then we must try to understand what you don't know? |
Don't give up on things that are difficult for you if they are important for your life. Search for new ways of learning about them and succeeding in your goals. |
